I have just completed the first three months of my contract with Yichang No.1 High School. I抦 teaching level one students in the program called Friendly Experimental Classes. When I look back, I realize how much I had already learned about teaching English as a foreign language in this beautiful school. I have learnt that the attention span of my young students is much shorter than that of the adults I normally teach in Canada. Therefore we have to make our classes lively and fast-paced. Students love listening to songs and watching movies in English, so we make these activities part of the curriculum. I 憁 fascinated by many differences between high school student life in China and in Canada. Students here are spending most of their days being in school, which is almost like their second home. They work hard on the academic part, but they also have a lot of physical exercise. I抳e got an impression that it makes the students very close to each other. Living in Yichang has been a very positive experience for me so far. I enjoy living in a traditional neighborhood. The street life is so interesting! Nothing is hidden; people are working and socializing on the street. I can find a lot of delicious food being cooked and sold around here. We have a lively street market nearby where I抦 shopping every day. An added bonus is being so close to the beautiful park along the river. I admire the large number of people, many of them senior citizens, doing all sorts of exercise in the open air. I started doing Tai Chi in the park myself. Every day brings something new and interesting. I抦 looking forward to the rest of the school year in No.1 High School in Yichang.
